Uh, Mr Lawrence, sir?

Did you actually just explain magic through quantum theory?
Did you just do the thing?

"We wrap up our violent and mysterious world in a pretense of understanding. We paper over the voids in our comprehension with science or religion, and make believe that order has been imposed. And, for most of it, the fiction works. We skim across surfaces, heedless of the depths below. Dragonflies flitting over a lake, miles deep, pursuing erratic paths to pointless ends."Mark Lawrence, Prince of Thorns (via okuroskye)

While reading ‘Prince Of Thorns’ I will admit I was hesitant. I blame the likes of Lian Hearn (not her real name I know) for making me lose that willingness to abadon myself on the tide of a book. I always worry I’ll get to that last chapter and have my faith and time rewarded with the equivalent of a godzilla stomp through all the author’s hard work and setup resulting in ruin at the last minute.
I am aware it’s obviously their work, and their work to do with what they please, by no means put on this mound of dirt to solely entertain me - but I am wary of getting invested and now leave it to the final page before I make my call. Caution.
I couldn’t help but like ‘Prince Of Thorns’, and while it is very much a foundation novel, the Broken Empire Trilogy is the big picture and it’s a story you unravel piece by tiny piece. I’d say Jorg is an anti-hero but to be fair, he’s actually more evil than that but as a character his antics and narrative make these books worthwhile. Admittedly not for everyone, but I enjoyed them.

As a child there’s a horror in discovering the limitations of the ones you love. The time you find that your mother cannot keep you safe, that your tutor makes a mistake, that the wrong path must be taken because the grown-ups lack the strength to take the right one… each of those moments is the theft of your childhood, each of them a blow that kills some part of the child you were, leaving another part of the man exposed, a new creature, tougher but tempered with bitterness and disappointment.
